Preparing for a Successful School Year
July 17, 2026
As a new school year approaches, it’s natural for students, and families alike, to experience a mix of excitement, anticipation, and a little bit of anxiety. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, or returning to familiar environment, a little preparation can go a long way in helping them to feel confident, excited, and ready to learn. Preparing for a successful school year doesn’t have to be overwhelming, we can help! Here, at AZ Aspire, we want to help your student succeed, so here are a few simple ways to set your child up for a successful school year.
Re-establish a Routine
Summer schedules often look very different from the school year and students thrive on consistency. One to two weeks before school starts, begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up times to match your student’s school schedule. Consistent sleep is essential for concentration, emotional regulation, and overall well-being for students (and parents!).
Practice morning routines together so your student knows what to expect. Students with autism thrive with knowing the expectations. Having clothes laid out, their (clear) backpacks packed, and lunches planned the night before can help make the mornings less stressful and start the kids off on the right foot first thing in the morning!
Talk About the Upcoming School Year
Students often have questions or worries about new teachers, new classmates, or even a new classroom (for those moving from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, or new schools altogether). Encourage open communication about what they’re looking forward to and what may be making them a bit anxious.
Listen without judgement and reassure them that it is normal to have mixed emotions. A positive attitude from parents and guardians can help help students build confidence as they enter into the new school year. When they walk through the doors at AZ Aspire, our caring staff will take the time to get to know each student, helping them feel welcomed, understood, and supported from day one.
Encourage Independence
By providing students with age-appropriate independent tasks, they can feel capable, prepared, and in control. Depending on their age, encourage your student to:
Pack their backpack with items they need for each day
Organize their preferred school supplies
Select their clothing for the next day
Pack their own lunches
Write out their morning routine
These small responsibilities can make a huge difference in building their confidence and supporting their problem-solving skills.
Read Together Every Day
Learning doesn’t begin and end in the classroom. Studies show that reading 15-20 minutes each day can help strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, and foster a love of learning. Let your student choose books that are of high interest to them and make reading an enjoyable part of your daily routine. For older students, reading articles, magazines, or listening to audiobooks can be equally as valuable and support the same skills. At AZ Aspire, we recognize that our students learn differently, so we do not give homework (unless it is part of a student’s unique learning plan), so reading together is a great way to continue the learning process at home!
Built Healthy Habits
A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Nutritious meals, regular physical activity, and plenty of water help students stay energized and focused throughout the day. We support a Maslow before Bloom approach at AZ Aspire, where students’ basic needs come before learning. If a student is focused on being hungry, it can be a challenge for them to focus on their learning in class.
Downtime is also incredibly important as well! Our students often have therapies, habilitation, respite, and other services after school (which is why we are a No Homework school), so being sure that they have opportunities to relax, recharge, and play after school is important.
Stay Connected with School
Strong partnerships between families and schools are one of the greatest predictors of student success! Open communication allows for families and educators to celebrate successes, address concerns early, and work together to help students succeed. Attend open houses, read school newsletters, monitor communication, attend school-wide events, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions. We are here to work together to create consistency and provide support students need to thrive. You are an expert in your student! Through ongoing communication and collaboration, we can create an individualized plan that can support academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth.
Celebrate Effort, Not Just Achievement
Student success isn’t only measured by grades. Celebrate their effort, their perseverance, their kindness, and their growth throughout the year. Our students need to feel confident in their abilities and when they know they’re supported, they’re more willing to take healthy academic risks, ask questions, and keep trying when learning is a challenge.
At AZ Aspire, we believe every student deserves an educational environment where they are seen, valued, and empowered to succeed. Through individualized instruction, compassionate educators, and meaningful partnerships with families, we can help build the skills and confidence that they need for success in school and beyond.
As you prepare for the upcoming school year, please remember that you do not have to do it alone! Together, we can create a supportive foundation that helps every student discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and reach their full potential!
