Emotional Regulation: Helping Students Thrive at School
Students with disabilities deserve to feel safe, understood, and capable of success. While academic growth is a critical component to education, we also know that learning cannot happen without emotional well-being. This is why emotional regulation is woven into everything that we do at AZ Aspire Academy.
What is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional regulation is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in healthy and appropriate ways. It doesn’t mean students never feel frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed. Instead, it means that they need to learn strategies to cope with those feelings, solve problems, and return to a calm, ready-to-learn state.
For many students, especially those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities, or other emotional or developmental disabilities, emotional regulation is a skill that requires direct instruction, practice, and support.
Why Emotional Regulation Matters in School
Students experience many emotions throughout the school day. They may become excited about a fun activity, frustrated by a challenging assignment or social encounter, nervous during transitions, or disappointed when plans change.
When students learn emotional regulation skills, they are better able to:
Focus on learning and complete classroom tasks and assignments
Build positive relationships with peers and adults
Self-advocate and communicate their needs appropriately
Solve problems independently
Recover from and persevere through challenges
Feel confident to take academic risks
These skills extend far beyond the classroom and prepare students for success and independence in the community, home, postsecondary educational environments, and eventually, the workplace.
How Can You Support Emotional Regulation
Behavior is a form of communication, and therefore, instead of asking, “What’s wrong with this student?” We must ask, “What is this student trying to tell us?” It’s critical to identify the underlying needs behind a behavior while teaching a student a healthier way to express themselves.
Some of the strategies that could be included include:
Teaching students to recognize emotions using visuals, social stories, or age-appropriate discussions
Creating predictable routines to help students feel safe and secure
Provide sensory and movement breaks throughout the day
Using calm-down spaces where students can regroup without punishment
Teach coping strategies such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and positive self-talk
Reinforce positive behaviors through encouragement and consistent expectations
Collaborating with families to ensure that strategies are consistent between home and school
Each student is unique, and the approach to emotional regulation and teaching the skills should be individualized to meet each student’s strengths and needs.
Progress Over Perfection
Learning emotional regulation takes time. Just as students need practice to become better readers or mathematicians, they also need opportunities to practice managing emotions.
There will be difficult days, and that’s okay!
Each challenge provides an opportunity to learn a new skill, build resilience, and strengthen confidence. It’s important to celebrate growth, no matter how small, because each step forward matters.
Partnering with Families
Families play a vital role in helping their students to develop emotional regulation skills. When schools and families work together, students receive consistent support that helps them feel secure and understood.
Simple ways families can reinforce these skills at home include:
Naming and validating emotions
Modeling healthy coping strategies
Practicing deep breathing together
Maintaining predictable routines
Celebrating effort and progress over perfection
Together, schools and home teams can help children build the confidence and resilience they need to navigate life’s challenges. When students learn to understand and regulate their emotions, they gain far more than self-control, they gain confidence to face challenges, build meaningful relationships, and reach their full potential!
